I'm 36 weeks and getting contractions that last about 30 seconds. They come and go irregularly. Is this the real thing?
The key differences: True labor contractions get longer (60–90 sec), stronger, and more frequent over time (the 5-1-1 rule: every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour). They don't go away with movement or a warm bath. Braxton Hicks are usually irregular, shorter (under 45 sec), not progressively intensifying, and often stop when you change position or hydrate. At 36 weeks, irregular 30-second contractions are almost certainly Braxton Hicks, but time them carefully and call your doctor if they start coming every 5 minutes.
I went to labor and delivery twice thinking it was real labor at 37 weeks and both times they sent me home with Braxton Hicks. The nurses were totally kind about it — they told me 'it's always better to come and check.' Trust your instincts. If something feels different or more intense, go in.
Drink a large glass of water and lie on your left side for 30 minutes. Braxton Hicks often stop with hydration and rest. If they continue and intensify, that's your sign to call.
