My haemoglobin dropped to 9.8 at 24 weeks. Doctor prescribed iron tablets but I want to boost it through diet too. What Indian foods helped?
Top Indian iron sources: (1) Horsegram (kulthi dal) and rajma — very high in iron. (2) Drumstick leaves / moringa — one of the richest plant sources, great in dal or roti. (3) Sesame seeds (til) — add to chutney or laddoo. (4) Dried apricots and dates. (5) Jaggery with warm milk. (6) Spinach and methi cooked in iron kadhai (the cooking vessel itself adds iron!). Crucially: eat vitamin C-rich foods (lemon, amla, tomato) with every iron-rich meal — it increases absorption by up to 300%. Avoid tea/coffee for 1 hour after meals as tannins block iron absorption.
My gynaecologist told me about cooking in a cast iron tawa — I started making rotis on it and my iron levels improved noticeably alongside the supplements. Also, red meat twice a week if you're non-vegetarian — heme iron from meat is absorbed far more efficiently than plant iron. And yes, avoid that post-meal chai until your levels come up!
Amla (Indian gooseberry) is your best friend here — it's one of the richest vitamin C sources and acts as an iron absorption booster. I had one raw amla every morning. Moringa dal I made 3x a week. Haemoglobin went from 9.5 to 11.8 in 6 weeks with supplements + diet combined.
