I love mangoes and papaya — are these safe to eat in large quantities near delivery?
Ripe papaya is completely safe in pregnancy — the concern is with unripe/raw papaya which contains latex that can trigger contractions. Ripe yellow papaya in moderate amounts is nutritious and great for digestion. Mangoes are also safe and rich in vitamin C and A. Avoid excess of anything high in sugar if you have gestational diabetes. Other great third-trimester fruits: dates (linked to easier labor in studies), kiwi, pomegranate, and avocado.
My doctor specifically said 2 medjool dates a day from 36 weeks — there's actually good research showing it can soften the cervix and shorten labor. I did it and had a shorter active labor phase. Worth discussing with your OB!
